In the Regeneron Science Talent Search competition, a total of 300 Hudson Valley's best and brightest high school students competed with 300 top American students.
300 scholars were selected from 1,760 applications received from 611 high schools in 49 states. 300 hail from 193 U.S. and international high schools in Puerto Rico and two other countries.
Among these scholars, 27 are from Westchester, three are from Putnam and one is from the Netherlands.
Each selected scholar and their school will receive a scholarship of US$2,000.
According to the Scientific Society, “Scholars are selected based on their outstanding research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking and commitment to being a scientist.”
The talent search aims to provide students with a national stage to showcase their original research results and "praise the hard work and discoveries of young scientists who have brought new perspectives to major global challenges."
This year's projects include topics ranging from bioinformatics to public health and energy efficiency.
Maya Ajmera, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Scientific Association, said: “Each of these scholars has extraordinary motivation, creativity and curiosity. They represent our commitment to the future and our collective well-being. Hopeful prospects." The pandemic prevented them from completing the project.
She added: “At a time when the educational experience of many students was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, I am extremely proud to see talented young scientists and engineers eager to make new insights for solving the world’s toughest problems. ."
Regeneron scholars selected from the Hudson Valley and their projects:
On Thursday, January 21, 40 of these 300 scholars will be named Regeneron Science Talent Search finalists. From March 10 (Wednesday) to March 17 (Wednesday), all 40 finalists will compete for more than $1.8 million in prize money provided by Regeneron.
